Tourism is Not Entertainment. Tourism is Big Business.

Tourism is often reduced to sightseeing, holidays, beaches, festivals, food, and entertainment. Behind these experiences is a complex global industry that creates jobs, generates foreign exchange, stimulates investment, supports local businesses, and contributes significantly to national and local economic development.

When people travel, they spend money on accommodation, transportation, restaurants, attractions, tour operators, entertainment, shopping, events, crafts, and a wide range of services. This spending creates a multiplier effect that reaches farmers, artisans, drivers, hoteliers, entrepreneurs, communities, and governments.

Tourism also drives infrastructure development, destination marketing, cultural preservation and pride, environmental conservation, and international connectivity.

Countries and destinations that take tourism seriously treat it as an economic sector, an investment opportunity, a source of employment, a tool for community development, and a strategic instrument for national development.

Kenya, Uganda,Rwanda, Tanzania and Coast in particular must move beyond seeing tourism simply as people visiting attractions. We must build competitive tourism products, strengthen destinations, improve service quality, attract investment, develop skilled human resources, embrace technology, and ensure that local communities capture a meaningful share of tourism’s economic benefits.

Tourism is not just about visitors. It is about value creation. It is not merely consumption. It is an industry.

Tourism should therefore, not be seen as entertainment. It is BIG BUSINESS.
