5 Days Best of Nyungwe & Akagera Wildlife Safari

5 Days

Rwanda, known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” offers some of the most spectacular and diverse natural experiences in Africa. This 5-day safari is a perfect combination of primate tracking in the misty Nyungwe Forest and big game viewing in the scenic savannahs of Akagera National Park. From the high-altitude rainforest canopy walks to thrilling game drives across open plains, this tour offers an unmatched opportunity to witness Rwanda’s unique biodiversity and cultural beauty. Ideal for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers, this itinerary combines comfort, adventure, and unforgettable landscapes.

Day 1: Kigali to Nyungwe National Park – Journey through Rwanda’s Heartland

Your safari begins in Kigali, where your guide will pick you up from your hotel or Kigali International Airport. After a short briefing, you’ll embark on a scenic drive towards the southwest of Rwanda. Along the way, you have the option to visit the Ethnographic Museum in Huye, which offers a rich cultural insight into Rwandan heritage.

As you drive through the picturesque hills and tea plantations, you’ll notice the landscape gradually transitioning into lush rainforests as you approach Nyungwe National Park. Arrive in the late afternoon and check into your lodge, nestled on a hill with sweeping views of the forest canopy.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking & Canopy Walk in Nyungwe Forest

Wake up early for a once-in-a-lifetime experience—chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest, one of Africa’s oldest rainforests and home to 13 primate species. After a briefing at the park headquarters, you’ll set off into the forest with experienced rangers to track the energetic and intelligent chimpanzees.

In the afternoon, enjoy a guided canopy walk—an elevated suspension bridge that offers a bird’s-eye view of the forest. This is the only canopy walk of its kind in East Africa, giving you the opportunity to spot rare birds, monkeys, and breathtaking views above the treetops.

You’ll arrive at Akagera in the late afternoon. If time allows, enjoy a short sunset game drive to spot wildlife such as giraffes, zebras, and antelopes. Settle in for the night at your lodge overlooking Lake Ihema or the park’s rolling savannah.

Day 4: Full-Day Safari in Akagera National Park

Today is dedicated to exploring the wonders of Akagera National Park on a full-day game drive. Rising early gives you the best chance to encounter Africa’s Big Five—lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros. The park is also home to numerous other species including impalas, warthogs, baboons, hippos, crocodiles, and more than 500 bird species.

In the afternoon, you may choose to relax or take an optional boat safari on Lake Ihema. This peaceful boat ride offers close encounters with hippos, crocodiles, and aquatic birds such as African fish eagles and kingfishers.
