The Maasai Mara National Reserve, located in southwestern Kenya, is one of Africa’s most famous safari destinations, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, abundant wildlife, and the annual Great Migration of wildebeest and zebras. Visitors from all over the world come to witness the Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino — as well as cheetahs, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, and a rich diversity of birds.
This 5-day, 4-night itinerary is designed to give you a well-rounded safari experience, combining thrilling game drives, cultural interactions with the Maasai people, and moments to relax in the wild beauty of the African savannah.
Day 1: Arrival in Maasai Mara
After arriving in Nairobi, you will embark on a scenic drive or take a short domestic flight to Maasai Mara. The road trip takes about 5-6 hours, passing through the Great Rift Valley with sweeping views and photo opportunities.
Upon arrival at your lodge or tented camp, you will check in and enjoy a warm welcome lunch. After a brief rest, head out for an afternoon game drive to get your first taste of Maasai Mara’s incredible wildlife. Look out for elephants, giraffes, antelopes, and if lucky, your first sighting of a lion or leopard preparing for the evening hunt.
Return to your lodge by sunset, freshen up, and enjoy a hearty dinner under the stars while listening to the sounds of the African night.
Day 2: Full-Day Game Drive and Big Cat Spotting
Start your day early with a light breakfast and embark on a full-day game drive with packed lunch. This extended drive allows you to explore deeper into the reserve and cover different habitats, from riverine forests to open grasslands.
Your experienced guide will track the Big Five, as well as cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, and a variety of birds. Visit the Mara River to spot hippos and crocodiles, and during the migration season (July–October), you might witness the dramatic river crossings where wildebeest and zebras face the gauntlet of predators.
Enjoy a picnic lunch at a scenic spot inside the reserve, surrounded by breathtaking views. After more game viewing in the afternoon, return to camp by evening for dinner and optional storytelling by the campfire.
Day 3: Hot Air Balloon Safari and Maasai Village Visit
For a truly unforgettable experience, rise before dawn for an optional hot air balloon safari (advance booking required). As the sun rises, you’ll float silently over the plains, watching herds of animals below and taking in the sweeping beauty of the Mara. After landing, enjoy a champagne breakfast in the bush.
In the late morning or afternoon, visit a Maasai village to learn about the customs, traditions, and daily life of the Maasai people. You’ll have the chance to interact with villagers, visit a traditional manyatta (homestead), watch dances, and maybe even try your hand at spear throwing.
The rest of the afternoon is yours to relax at the lodge, enjoy the pool, or take a shorter evening game drive before dinner.
Day 4: Morning and Evening Game Drives
Today you’ll experience the rhythm of the bush with two shorter game drives — one in the early morning and one in the late afternoon — which are the best times to see animals when they’re most active.
The morning drive offers a chance to witness predators returning from a night’s hunt, grazing herbivores, and a beautiful sunrise over the plains. Return to the lodge for a leisurely brunch and midday rest.
In the late afternoon, set out again in search of any animals you haven’t yet spotted, maybe focusing on elusive species like leopards or rare birds. You might also explore different parts of the reserve, such as the Mara Triangle or the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, depending on your lodge location.
Day 5: Final Game Drive and Departure
On your final day, wake up early for a sunrise game drive, maximizing your last moments in the wild. Savor the crisp morning air, the golden light over the savannah, and final sightings of your favorite animals.
After breakfast back at the lodge, check out and begin your return journey to Nairobi by road or flight. Depending on your travel schedule, you may have time for optional stops like visiting a curio market or the Giraffe Centre or Karen Blixen Museum back in Nairobi before catching your international flight.
